Employment Opportunities/Qualifications

Alternate Shelter Society is an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from persons of all abilities, cultures, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, genders, and religious groups. We strongly encourage First Nations Persons to apply. All caregivers, staff, and volunteers at Alternate Shelter Society must have a criminal record check completed before they can begin working in any of our resources, programs, or with any of the children in our care. We also require an application form, resume, three references, proof of a valid driver's license, a driver's abstract, a food handling certificate, a TB test, a medical examination and "standard first aid/CPR" approved by Community Care Licensing. Once these requirements are satisfied, you must set up an interview with the Managing Director.

Alternate Shelter Society employs Residential Child and Youth Care workers to provide care for the young people who are living in our resources. Normally, new employees work out of our relief pool, where they receive on-the-job training and performance evaluations. Our regular policy is to hire permanent staff from the relief pool, although this is not always possible because of the specialized nature of our requirements.

Relief staff may work regular shifts. The onus is on the staff member to ensure that they have met their probationary expectations. The probation period is 3 months long. Please see the Training/Orientation Checklist for more information. If an individual has not met these expectations at the end of their probationary period, then they will not be eligible to continue working in the relief pool, as dictated by our policy and procedures.

After a successful interview, we ask you to visit at least one of our programs or resources to meet the manager, staff, and residents. We ask you to spend as much time there as you feel is necessary to ensure that you feel it is a suitable environment for you. It is very important for applicants to feel comfortable and suited to the work. If you do not feel comfortable and safe, it is unlikely that you will make the youth feel comfortable and safe. We also ask you to read the entire training manual. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask a supervisor. It is better to ask then to interpret incorrectly.

Once you meet the manager, visit the facility, and feel ready to start, you will be placed on the relief list where you will be on-call. We try to provide regular shifts for relief workers, so you can be trained on a regular basis. An evaluation to confirm your progress will be done after 3 months.

There are no guarantees of achieving permanent employment. Many factors come into play for our hiring decisions. Hiring will be based on skills, suitability (a healthy adult role model), education/training, experience and knowledge about the child and youth care sector, team involvement and filling out the team membership (to be broad-based and an appropriate mix of gender), and seniority (length of time in the relief pool). No probationary period is completed without staff achieving the suitability and skill set to meet basic job requirements. Staff may pass their probationary period, but still be in the relief pool if a suitable permanent position is not available.
