Alternate Shelter Button Drive
The
Button Drive is a fundraising initiative intended to spread a little
beauty to the community via decorative pin-back buttons. All buttons
are handmade by Alternate Shelter staff and volunteers. To volunteer,
contact Alternate Shelter Society at info@alternateshelter.com.
Proceeds go directly to the programs; thank you for your support!
Become a Board Member
As
a non-profit reporting society, governed by a Board of
Directors, we are dependent on dedicated
volunteers. If you feel you can contribute to the better functioning of
the society please request information on becoming a volunteer Board
Member. The Alternate Shelter Society Annual General Meeting was held on November 24th, 2010. The next one will be in November 2011. Everyone is welcome; general membership to
the society is available for a nominal fee of $5. We are looking to
ensure that a variety of cultural and ethnic groups are adequately
represented on the Board of Directors. We encourage anyone who has an interest in youth care to submit an application!
Employment
Registered Child and Youth Care Workers
The Society employs Residential Child and Youth Care workers to provide care for the young people who are living in our resources. Normally new employees work out of our relief pool where they receive on-the-job training and performance evaluations. Our regular policy is to hire permanent staff from the relief pool though this is not always possible because of the specialized nature of our requirements.
There are no guarantees of permanent employment. Many factors come into play for our hiring decisions. Hiring will be based on skills, suitability (a healthy adult role model), education/training, experience and knowledge related to the child and youth care sector, and team involvement. No probationary period is completed without staff achieving the suitability and skill set to meet basic job requirements. Staff may pass their probationary period, but still be in the relief pool if a suitable permanent position is not available. All employees must undergo a criminal records check.
We are an equal opportunity employer and no not discriminate. We are, however, protective of our youth. Only applicants with the necessary qualifications are considered.
