Alternate Shelter Society achieves its goal of assisting troubled youth through three main programs: Valley House, Murrayville, and Nelson Island.

:: Valley House

This six-bed resource offers a safe and nurturing environment for children and youth of the Burnaby Operating Region who have been recently removed from abusive homes, are in care by agreement, are between placements or are “on the run” as a means of survival. During their stay, residents are reconnected to appropriate services, families and their community, are actively involved in day programs and an evening recreation program, and the care planning process is implemented where possible.

:: Murrayville Program

The Murrayville program provides an integrated therapeutic approach to treating youth who have been described as “behavioural/conduct disordered.” Like all our programs, Murrayville assumes all behaviour has meaning and purpose. In working with our youth, we try to provide an environment where youth feel in control - where they feel they have a choice. We know that strong people can emerge when given the opportunity to learn and take control of their behaviour. We like to think that the single most important aspect of our program is our commitment to the increase of the youth's control over all aspects of his/her life.

:: Nelson Island Program

The warm, nurturing base created by Nelson Island’s staff in a drug/alcohol free environment, coupled with Alternate Shelter Society’s life skills programs, forms the foundation for this program. Since the wilderness area is remote, peer pressure is reduced, which provides residents with an environment that allows self-reflection and a chance to begin learning the process of self-help and self-healing. With the assistance of highly skilled youth care counsellors, an education/work program, and general health and body tone improvements, individuals begin to learn patience, understanding, and gain the strength to make positive choices in their lives. The Nelson Island Program is not an end in itself, but is a step towards recovery for most youth.

The Nelson Island Program is currently on haitus due to funding cuts, but is available for future program development. Please contact Alternate Shelter Society for more information.
