History
Established in 1977, the Society provides residential and support services to a population of youth variously described as “abused,” “homeless,” “at risk,” and “behaviourally disordered”. All youth come to us through the Ministry of Children and Family Development and are between the ages of twelve and eighteen, inclusive. If a youth is sent to us, it means that they have nowhere else to go. The length of their stay is dependant on how long it takes to find them a stable place to live more permanently.
Mandate
Our mandate is simple: to care for the children and youth at Alternate Shelter Society as best we can.
Purpose
We are a last resort for the youth we serve. In many ways we are the safe haven to them that “home” is to most young people. Youth are housed in one of our three resources: Valley House, Murrayville, and Clover House.
The Resources:
Valley House
Valley House is a six-bed resource offers a safe and nurturing environment for children and youth of the Simon Fraser Region who have been: recently removed from unsuitable environments, are in care by agreement, are between placements, or “on the run” as a means of survival. During their stay, residents are reconnected to appropriate services, their family, and their community. Youth are actively involved in day programs, lifeskills training, and recreation programs. The care planning process is implemented where possible.
Murrayville
Murrayville provides an integrated therapeutic approach to treating children and youth who have been described as “behavioural/conduct disordered.” These youth have a variety of issues with their physican and/or mental health. The integration of residential services with education, day programs, and lifeskills training provides youth-focused care planning that is based on each individuals unique needs.
Clover House (Open March 2011!)
Clover House is our newest resource and only just up and running! We've been busy setting things up but more information is pending!
